THE ARTISTS

Jenna Applegarth & Felipe Braga
Jenna first started dancing when she was still in diapers. She began swing dancing some many years later, luckily no longer in diapers. Jenna continues to expand her dancing repertoire and share her love and knowledge of these dances with others. Although she enjoys pretty much any type of dancing and music you can move to, her first love is Lindy Hop. Her energy and passion create the perfect environment for learning, creating challenging yet applicable lessons.

Jenna has attended, coordinated, and taught various workshops and exchanges all across the globe. Above all else she believes that learning to dance should be fun. With over 10 years of teaching/coaching experience, she loves finding new ways to connect with other dancers on the floor and in the classroom.
Many ask how Felipe learned Lindy Hop so quickly: transitioning from a toilet-cleaning newbie dancer marveling at the Folkets Hus floor to a Herrang instructor in three short years. The explanation is simple: his pre-Lindy life prepared him for what was to come.
Training in theatrical acting gave Felipe body awareness and control as well as an ability to improvise–both in his energetic and now infamous class warm-ups, and in the competitions where he always shines. Felipe’s experience playing drums, as well as his youth in Brazil –where the music and dance culture are rich– gave him an innate sense of rhythm. And finally Felipe’s days as a dancing party-animator for a live music club in Brazil gave him plenty of training for getting people excited about dancing in his Lindy Hop classes today. But more important than any of this is that Felipe has embodied the Lindy Hop spirit since before he knew it existed. It is hard to find someone who doesn’t like Felipe. His warm personality charms every dancer he meets, and his ability to connect with people in conversation carries over onto the dance floor.
Kamile Pundziute & Arnas Jasiūnas
Kamile is a real treat in Vilnius Lindy Hop community, keeping it swingin’ since 2003. She has dedicated her life to dance. She is a dancer, a teacher, a choreographer and also a dance – movement therapist. She has travelled many places in Europe teaching, performing and spreading love for dancing. Her education in somatics and movement therapy bring concepts of movement and following to a whole new level and is a base for her teaching. A knowledgeable approach coupled with an honest, joyful perspective of life.

Arnas is one of the top dancers of the thriving Lithuanian Lindy Hop scene, dancing since 2006. His original approach to dance will add to the knowledge of a dancer of any level. Arnas ideas are based on concepts of body movement, rhythms and authenticity of both the dance and the dancer. With his dance technique and teaching methods in the background Arnas turns the classroom into an effective workshop and gives students ideas for future training. His long training in music makes his dancing a creative musical experience. And his playful personality will surprise and cheer you on the social dance floor.
JoYsS
JoYsS is a Jazz, Contemporary, Swing and Hip Hop professional dancer. He took acting classes at the school of art “la Comète” in Paris. He won 1st place at the Solo jazz Contest at Paris Jazz Roots Festival 2015, and 1st place in the Solo Charleston division at ILHC 2015. He is one of the most accomplished dancers in the international swing dance scene.

For him, the body is like a stringed instrument. Each of these strings are feelings (sadness, happiness, melancholy…) and we have to learn not to be afraid of them in order to play the best melody… to be a “HEARTist”. In his classes he emphasizes improving his students movements by teaching how to better understand their own bodies, which helps growing as a dancer, because it fosters coordination, balance and expression. This in turn helps improve their musicality and capacity for improvisation, and to never lose the pleasure of learning – skills absolutely crucial for every dancer.

And yet dance is not his only professional activity! He is the artistic director and founder of the award winning company Cie ULTIME and a music composer.
Rikard Ekstrand
Rikard started dancing at the age of seven and soon became a way of living. He studied a few different dance styles, and now based in Stockholm, he is a core member of Harlem Hot Shots, and travels the world teaching at international swing dance camps, and performing. He is also a member of the Swedish Jazz band Hornsgatan Ramblers.

Rikard considers swing dancing an art form, a culture legacy and sees himself as a student of rhythm. If you ever had the chance to take one of his classes there is no way you didn't realise his passion for music and dance. Communication, freedom of expression, and musicality are some of his favourite topics.

At Thessaloniki Swing Festival Rikard will mainly teach at the solo jazz track and some theme classes (solo or lindy). Expect to be challenged and get inspired.
